when the will to make music receded, at least I hadn't forgot how to listen. there were times when I forgot, when I would catch myself entirely sealed in my skull, thoughts screaming louder than the trams from the late 1960s passing me on the street. but as I would cross from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, from tram to bus to boat, the sounds around me would shift. how the brick streets and buildings of haga swallow sound, how the muscle cars rip and roar down viktoriagatan here in gothenburg just as they do on lake drive in milwaukee.

it's been helpful and healing to stop and listen with intention. I think of Pauline Oliveros and Hildegard Westerkamp as I sit on benches or walk in the grass, breathing deeply, holding on desperately to the world that unfolds around me. I think of Georges Perec and Blue Gene Tyranny and the everyday life that keeps us all in order. cooking, transit, work, laundry, the dishes. this has been nine months of learning how to be in the world. it has been a year and a half of losing my place in books and having to start over again from the beginning. at least I can still listen.
